There were twelve people at this weekend; Jan, Hazel, Judith, Dave W, Maggie M, Mags R, Cathy, Phinella, Edna, Andrew M, Sue B and myself. It was efficiently organised by June who, sadly, was unable to attend.
It’s fair to say that the weather was very “Welsh” with rain and grey skies with the very occasional blue sky peeking out from behind the clouds.
We stayed at the Beili Neuadd bunkhouse, approximately two miles out of the town of Rhayader in Powys, mid Wales. This characterful bunkhouse with its slate walls consisted of two six bunk and one four bunk en-suite rooms.
Two walks took place on the Saturday. I participated in the one to the Elan Valley which was led by Andrew Morris and which was around 20 km. Our route (OS Maps ref: AM1 – Penygarre Res) started in the town, crossed Esgair Perfedd and skirted the two most northerly reservoirs; Craig Goch and Penygarreg before ascending towards (but not touching!) Crugyn Gwyddel (533m) and then descending back to Rhayader. The other group, led by Dave Wilson and joined by a prospective member, David Lewis, took in Plynlimon/Pumlumon Fawr (OS Maps ref: Plynlimon 181123) which at 752 m is the highest point in mid-Wales. The route planned was 21.4 km whilst I heard later that the route taken was a bit further clocking up an awesome 27km. Unfortunately, no photos of this epic walk were found to exist!
