To general relief Friday’s heatwave was followed by more temperate weather on Saturday with mainly overcast skies but sunshine in the late afternoon. Eleven of us set off downhill from Amersham station, through the Old Town and then off along narrow paths through fields of wheat and shady woods. The anti-clockwise circuit took us through Winchmore Hill and on to a drink at the welcoming Red Lion pub in Coleshill, after relaxing beside the pond with our sandwiches and some very tame mallards. Refreshed, we headed east and south towards the Chalfonts before heading back towards Amersham. The variety of wild flowers kept those in the know busy informing those who weren’t and widened to gardening and much else besides. The walk of 21 km finished back at Amersham station at about 5 p.m. and the journey home.
