Black Mountains weekend (November 2021)

The weekend got off to a good start with an easy drive to Llanbedr near Crickhowell in South Wales. The minute we entered our accommodation we were impressed with the facilities. There were two well-equipped kitchens, a large lounge/dining room and the bedrooms had en-suite shower rooms. The pub where we had a delicious Friday dinner was only a few metres walk away. Everything was fabulous until we learned the disappointing news that our organiser Stephen J was ill and unable to come. He missed a great weekend and we all hope he gets better quickly.

The weather was very sunny and although daylight was short, we were able to get some great walks. The autumn colours were warm and stunning and the local scenery was very beautiful. On Saturday, a group of David (Leader)and Susan W, George, Catriona, John JM, Judith, Clive, Mags and Chris P tackled a ridge walk to the northeast of Llanbedr. This was characterised by fabulous views in the sunshine - a series of peaks were bagged leading up to Pen y Gadair Fawr.

Meanwhile, Chris B and I, Hazel, Cathy and Julie were led from the bunkhouse by Ann up Sugar Loaf Mountain (Y Fal) and then to the top of Bryn Arw for lunch. We could see for miles and spotted the Malverns away to the East. Returning to Llanbedr, we enjoyed several old lanes and the river with amazing beech trees giving a picturesque autumnal display. That evening we enjoyed a scrumptious dinner - thanks to the cooks for their fine culinary efforts. On Sunday, we left on one of three walks: Chris P led a second assault up Sugar Loaf from the East; Catriona's team summited the Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fawr) near Abergavenny and George, Julia and Chris B walked south of Crickhowell at the Llangatwg Quarries. All in all, a great weekend. By Julia H.
